Föredrag - Yokai och Otaku

The museum is visited by manga and yokai researcher Oya Yasunori with an exciting talk about yokai but also about the connection to "Otaku", which roughly translates to geek culture.

Many yokai were created out of reverence for animals and natural phenomena. Yokai became a way to explain the world around them. But there are also tragic stories of people who have turned into yokai, or of innocent people who, for various reasons, have been condemned to a life of yokai. Stories of yokai can be both terrifying and sad. Today, such stories have been reinterpreted into lovable creatures that are especially popular among the anime and manga community.

Oya Yasunori is not only an expert in Manga and Yokai. He also creates his own yokai in the form of sculptures.

During this workshop, Oya talks about how he, among other things, created a mermaid. We also discuss how to think if you want to build a monster yourself.

The lecture is followed at 14:30 by a workshop "To create a being".

Yasunori Oya lives in Kyoto, and is a yokai researcher, writer, video creator, artist and manga creator. He currently also works as a curator at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Oya is a member of the yokai cosplay group "Aratama" and plans and runs Hyakki Yagyo (Night Parade of the Hundred Demons) events, as well as mystery-solving RPGs. Oya's book "Mangakyo Yokai Emaki" is a result of yokai research he did by visiting important places and listening to people's stories.
