Narrative dance performance about identity. The Palestinian choreographer and dancer Hala Salem in a personal work about the body as a source of belonging. Her search for ”home” becomes complicated in a world where both her body and her country are questioned and occupied. What if, as a Palestinian and a dancer, you are too masculine to be feminine and too feminine to be masculine? Where will you find a home then?

Hala Salem, born and raised in Deir Hanna, found safety in her own body and takes us through the story with physical dance. Saffron is about shaping your identity and learning to love yourself. To Lynn Adib’s groundbreaking blend of Arabic folk music and electronica, Salem rediscovers her body as a home. A sacred place that hovers between masculinity and femininity, between attachment and detachment, between finding oneself and losing oneself.

PRESS VOICE: After the premiere in February, one of Amsterdam’s biggest newspapers wrote: ”When Salem, who has always felt like an outsider, dances, something beyond words is released.”
