Kiruna mine's first female driller tells the story
IngMari Lundmark, 81, talks about her years as LKAB's first female driller since the ban on women in mines was lifted in 1978. For eight years, IngMari stood on a drill rig at the front of the Kiruna mine and lifted two tonnes of drill steel per shift.
What was it like to come to such a totally male-dominated world where few believed that she would be able to do the job? There are hilarious stories about inappropriate work clothes, wooden ass and muscle soreness, but also stories about how she was received in the mine, how she tried to fit in and be accepted and what battles she chose to take.
Through IngMari's daughter, Anneli, we get a historical look back at women in mines and answers to the question of why the women were banned, who led the fight to remove the ban, the resistance from unexpected quarters and examples of other female pioneers who broke new ground in the Kiruna mine.
